It is still January so I can use 2018 as an excuse! Here are 5 healthy and fitness myths I used to believe but are wrong and can decrease your results.
Fruits are full of nutrients, vitamins, and fiber, YES. And this is why we should all eat fruits. But, fruits are also rich in sugar. When sugar is ingested, its lever peak in your blood and your body delivers insulin hormone to regulate it. Outside of your body, you will feel energized for a bit, crave for more sugar and then lack energy. Fruits are all different and so is their glycemic index, some are sugary than others. In France where I live, it is recommended to eat at least 5 fruits and veggies per day. For me, I split this into 2 fruits and 3 veggies per day, to keep my sugar level down. This said, I still enjoy my banana in the morning!
You might think that running for an hour will make up for the 3 missed gym sessions this week. Oops, well, nope. Our body is smart and does not work like that. When you do some cardio, you are going to burn carbs, sugar, and water for the first 30 minutes. Then your body will realize that you are not stopping, so from 30 minutes to 45 minutes, you enter to the fat burning zone, where you will burn excessed fat stored in your body. After 45 minutes, your body will see that you are still not stopping, and it will start to eat muscles. And if you want to be lean and do cardio, you need these muscles.
If you started working out, you probably heard of this one. Guys are bulky because they are GUYS. It is a matter of hormones. Women have estrogen and progesterone, and guys have no estrogens with is replaced by testosterone. Testosterone is the hormone you need to get bulky. Moreover, bulky/muscular guys eat and drink supplements, such as proteins, creatin and other “mass gain” products designed for them. So as long as you do not drink or take any testosterone, you can lift as much weight as you want, you will not get bulky!
Before starting this one, I do not encourage you to skip breakfast (I mean, why would you do that? Breakfast is SO good!) and I do not encourage intermittent fasting either. But researchers have found that people who skip breakfast tend to gain weight because they will eventually get hungry in the morning and tend to over snack. So as long as you either take a breakfast later in the morning or not eat anything before lunch, skipping breakfast will not make you fat.
This one is very debatable: eating less will indeed make you lose weight since you will spend more energy than consuming it. However, I believe that these extra pounds are somewhere in your body, and to sustainably lose these extra pounds, you need to exercise to clear them out of your body. The maths to gain or lose weight is quite simple: it is the calories in vs out. If you eat more than you spend these calories, then you will gain weight. However, if you spend more energy than eating calories, you will be in a calorie deficit and your body will get the energy in your stored fat and you lose weight.
Sorry, this is so long, I hope you understand a little bit better how our body works and that you can make the best of 2018 by stopping these myths! Let me know if you knew that and if you heard about other myths!
